Our fall issue kicks off the new look of the Big Diamond. We hope you like our updated design. The front page also features an invitation for all to attend the General Meeting scheduled for October 11, 2005, where the new board will be elected. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the lovely Hillsboro Club (adjacent to the Hillsboro Lighthouse), and includes an auction, door prizes, free hors d'oeuvres, and a cash bar. Hope to see you there! Also in this issue...a reminiscent look at the lighthouse from someone who grew up on the grounds; the Florida Lighthouse Day proclamation; a history of the accomplishments of the HLPS from 1997 - 2005; announcing the details of the November 5, 2005, tour; a profile of the HLPS Gift Shop manager, Joyce Hager; new members; and a historical photo from 1910.
This issue features articles on the upcoming General Meeting on October 11, 2005, at the Hillsboro Club; the outcome of the location for the 1906 Keeper's Cottage; plans for the next Lighthouse Tour scheduled for Saturday, August 13, 2005; meet Stephen Attis, HLPS Vice President, founder of Vone Research, Inc., a non-profit group devoted to increase public awareness of Florida's maritime history and oceanic resources; a prediction on Hurricane Forces by Dr. Ray McAllister, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Ocean Engineering, FAU; learn more about Sea Turtles; two students from Broward County received honors at the Florida History Fair for their presentation on "Florida Lighthouses: Communicating Safety and Peril;" and, as always, a list of our newest members, donations and volunteer helpers.
This issue features dozens of colored photos from our February 2005 tour, including shots of the Barefoot Mailman, descendants of Lighthouse Keeper Ben Stone, and Coast Guard crew. Read about our upcoming tour for May 7, 2005, and our plans to preserve a historical Lighthouse Keeper's cottage from 1906. There's also an intimate portrait of the HLPS President, Hib Casselberry.
Note: Each page of our older newsletters is in its own PDF file.
